Solicitors Regulation Authority
Board Chair
Role Introduction
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is the regulator of solicitors and law firms in England and Wales, overseeing more than 200,000 solicitors and 9,000 firms in a sector that contributes around £60bn annually to the UK economy. As the legal services market continues to evolve, shaped by technological change, shifting consumer expectations and increasing regulatory complexity, the SRA must continue to adapt to remain an effective, modern regulator acting in the public interest.
The SRA is seeking to appoint a new Lay Chair of the Board, to take up post from January 2027. This is a significant and high‑profile opportunity to lead the Board at a time of organisational transformation, as the SRA develops its next strategy and continues to respond to a fast‑moving, increasingly complex legal services landscape.
Candidates should have a strong track record of leadership at Board level in a complex organisation, ideally including chairing experience and exposure to regulatory or regulated environments, alongside the ability to lead change and provide strategic direction to a diverse Board. They will demonstrate sound judgement, political acumen and the ability to build effective relationships across a complex stakeholder landscape, underpinned by excellent communication skills, resilience, independence of mind, and a clear commitment to accountability, transparency, equality, diversity and inclusion.
