Role Introduction

At a pivotal moment in its history, the Union Jack Club is seeking a leader who understands both duty and direction.

Union Jack Club has served the Armed Forces community for more than a century, offering a place of welcome, dignity and belonging in the heart of London. Founded in 1904 and opened by King Edward VII, the Club was created to ensure that enlisted service personnel and their families had a reputable home in the capital. Today, under the patronage of His Majesty King Charles III, it operates as a thriving membership organisation and high-quality hotel, with over 260 bedrooms, hospitality and events facilities, and a community of more than 86,000 members drawn from across the Armed Forces. With a turnover of around £13m and a dedicated team of staff, the Club combines commercial discipline with a clear charitable purpose, remaining resolutely committed to serving those who serve.

Following the planned retirement of the current Chief Executive at the end of 2026, the Union Jack Club is creating the new role of Club Director. This is a senior executive appointment, focused on the long-term strategic leadership of the Club and the charity that underpins it. Reporting to the Trustee Council through its President, the Club Director will set direction, champion values and represent the Club at the highest levels. The role carries significant delegated authority and encompasses governance oversight, financial sustainability, membership growth and external engagement. Working closely with an established executive team, the postholder will shape the Club’s future, strengthen its relationships across the military and civic landscape, and guide its commercial and fundraising activity at a particularly important moment as it approaches its 120th anniversary and continues an ambitious programme of investment and refurbishment.

The successful candidate will bring a strong affinity with, and understanding of, the military community, with ex-Armed Forces experience highly desirable. They will be an accomplished strategic leader, comfortable operating with Board-level accountability and able to balance vision with practical engagement. Credible, thoughtful and persuasive, they will build trust with members, staff and external stakeholders alike, and act as an effective ambassador for the Club with government, charities, corporate partners and the media. Personal integrity, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to the welfare of serving and ex-serving personnel will be essential, alongside the ability to support fundraising and commercial development in a way that safeguards the Club’s mission and reputation.
