Role Introduction

Fight for Sight is one of the UK’s leading funders of vision research, working to realise its vision of “Save Sight. Change Lives.” At a time when sight loss research remains significantly underfunded and the need for effective prevention, diagnosis and treatment has never been greater, the charity supports scientific research alongside social change initiatives that improve the lives of blind and vision impaired people. Headquartered in London with a reach across the UK, it works alongside researchers, clinicians, universities, the NHS, policymakers and communities to accelerate progress and strengthen the wider sight loss sector. In 2025/26, the charity managed 117 active grants with a value of £13.5 million across research and social change activities.

Fight for Sight is now seeking an exceptional Chief Scientific Officer to provide executive scientific leadership and help shape the next phase of its development. Reporting as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the postholder will lead the evolution of the charity’s scientific and innovation strategy, identifying where its funding, influence and partnerships can have the greatest impact. The role extends well beyond traditional research grant-making, encompassing the full pathway from scientific discovery to clinical application and patient benefit. Working closely with the Chief Executive, Board and scientific advisers, the Chief Scientific Officer will guide investment priorities, strengthen scientific governance, develop strategic partnerships and position the organisation as a leading catalyst for progress in vision research.

The successful candidate will bring an internationally credible scientific or clinical research profile, supported by a PhD, medical qualification or equivalent research standing. They will have a strong track record in developing scientific strategy and assessing research investment opportunities. An outstanding strategic thinker and relationship builder, they will be able to navigate complex scientific landscapes, build collaborations across sectors and communicate effectively with scientists, clinicians, industry leaders, funders, trustees and policymakers. Above all, they will share the organisation’s ambition to accelerate scientific progress and improve outcomes for people affected by sight loss.
