Role Introduction

The Henry Royce Institute (Royce) is the UK’s national institute for advanced materials research and innovation. Established in 2016 with support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Royce brings together world-leading researchers, industry and facilities from across the UK to accelerate materials discovery and translate research into economic and societal benefit. Led from its hub at The University of Manchester and working across a network of leading partner institutions, Royce plays a central role in advancing materials innovation to address major global challenges including clean energy, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies and healthcare.

Royce is now seeking to appoint new members to its Governing Board at an important stage in the Institute’s development. As Royce enters the next phase of its evolution and continues to implement the UK’s National Materials Innovation Strategy, Governing Board Members will play a key role in shaping the Institute’s strategic direction and ensuring it delivers significant impact for UK research, industry and society. For the right candidate, in addition to becoming a Governing Board Member, there is the possibility to take on the role of Royce Hydrogen Accelerator Chair.

Working closely with the CEO and Executive Team, Board members provide strategic oversight, guidance and constructive challenge to support the effective governance and long-term development of the Institute. They also act as ambassadors for Royce, helping to build strong relationships across government, industry, academia and the wider innovation community, while supporting efforts to enhance the Institute’s national and international profile.

The successful candidates will be highly regarded leaders with senior experience and the credibility to engage and influence at the highest levels across research, industry, government or investment communities. They will bring strategic insight, excellent stakeholder management skills and a strong interest in Royce’s mission to advance materials research and innovation for the benefit of the UK and wider society.
