Role Introduction

The University of Stirling is an ambitious, internationally recognised institution with a clear sense of purpose: to deliver education with impact and research that makes a positive difference to society. Founded in 1967 by royal charter, and now home to a global community of 17,500 students from over 140 nationalities, Stirling combines a strong heritage of innovation with a forward-looking commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and student experience.

Located in the heart of Scotland, with a stunning 330-acre campus and deep regional and global partnerships, the University is entering an exciting new phase of development. Against a rapidly evolving higher education landscape, Stirling is focused on strengthening its academic profile, enhancing operational effectiveness, and delivering long-term financial sustainability.

The University now seeks to appoint an outstanding Principal and Vice-Chancellor to lead the institution into its next chapter.

Reporting to the Chair of University Court, the Principal and Vice-Chancellor will be the University’s Chief Executive and academic leader. They will provide strategic vision and inspirational leadership, ensuring excellence across teaching, research, and the student experience. As the University’s principal ambassador, they will build strong relationships with government, industry, and global partners, enhancing Stirling’s reputation and impact.

The role will involve leading the delivery of the University’s Strategic Plan 2030, driving innovation and transformation, and fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture grounded in the University’s values of ambition, integrity and respect. The successful candidate will ensure the institution remains resilient, agile and well positioned to respond to sector challenges and opportunities.

Candidates will bring significant senior leadership experience within higher education, with a strong track record of strategic delivery, financial stewardship, and organisational transformation. They will demonstrate the ability to unite diverse stakeholders behind a shared vision, alongside the credibility and influence to operate effectively at national and international levels. A deep commitment to the mission of higher education and to the role universities play in society is essential.
