St George’s
Head
Role Introduction
Founded in 1888 by women who refused to accept the limits placed on girls’ education, St George’s School, Edinburgh has championed gender equality for over 130 years. Today it is an exceptional independent day and boarding school for around 600 pupils aged 2–18, including up to 50 boarders in its unique residential facility, Houldsworth House. Set within beautiful parkland on a single, walkable campus in Edinburgh, the School combines outstanding facilities with an inspiring community, delivering excellent examination results and consistently enabling over 90% of leavers to reach their first-choice university courses.
St George’s vision is to be one of the world’s pre-eminent schools for girls, developing confident young women with independent minds and strong values. Its four strategic pillars – an irresistible educational offer, an innovative and inclusive culture, a sustainable and campus-focused future, and a school deeply connected with its past and future – provide a clear framework for continued development. The School’s renowned internationalism, its Signature Curriculum actively championing subjects where women are underrepresented, and its vibrant outreach programmes including Fearless Fridays and Fearless Women in Computing, reflect an institution that is as outward-looking as it is academically rigorous.
The Council is now seeking an exceptional leader to take St George’s into its next chapter as Head. This is an opportunity to lead a school in excellent health – with a talented and committed staff body, strong pupil numbers, a thriving boarding community and a well-defined strategic direction. The new Head will build on these firm foundations, shaping an ambitious growth and improvement strategy, strengthening the School’s position as a leading independent school in both a Scottish and international context, and ensuring St George’s continues to be a school of choice for pupils and families.
The Council is looking for a proven senior leader with a deep commitment to the education of girls and a genuine understanding of high-performing independent school provision, including boarding. The successful candidate will be a fully qualified teacher, registered or eligible for registration with the GTCS, with knowledge of both the Scottish and English education systems and the financial, regulatory and governance landscape facing independent schools today. They will be a confident and persuasive communicator with the presence, resilience and warmth to inspire students, staff, parents and the wider community, and will bring the strategic vision and commercial acumen to secure St George’s long-term success.
