Role Introduction

Founded by Edward III in 1348 as the ongoing home of the Order of the Garter, the College of St George has maintained a tradition of daily worship within Windsor Castle for over 650 years. It is an independent Royal Peculiar - self-financing, and with no direct funding from Church or State - it is dedicated to worshipping God and supporting the Sovereign through prayer, example, and counsel. That mission is expressed through St George’s Chapel, with its world-class Music Department and Choir; St George’s House, which convenes leaders to explore moral and ethical questions of global importance; and St George’s School, which educates around 300 pupils including the Chapel’s choristers. Together, these form a living institution that welcomes over one million visitors and pilgrims each year.

As Chapter Clerk, you will be the College’s senior lay officer - the person who works in partnership with the Dean and Canons and Heads of Department to turn the vision and strategy of the Dean and Canons into practical operational reality. The role carries considerable autonomy and breadth. You will act as the operational liaison with the Royal Household, the Order of the Garter, Castle Police, and local authorities, including for state, royal, and ceremonial occasions. You will oversee the effective day-to-day running of the College, comprising one quarter of the precincts of Windsor Castle, coordinate events and activities across all departments, and serve as Chapter Secretary, Company Secretary of the Chapel shop, and Company Secretary of The Foundation of the College of St George. You will also be the Designated Safeguarding Lead for all Chapel matters and the College’s point of contact for all media enquiries.

We are looking for an accomplished senior leader with wide administrative and managerial experience, and the confidence to operate in complex, high-profile environments, who is in tune with the character and aspirations of the College. You will be a skilled relationship-builder, trusted by colleagues across the Castle community, and effective with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. You will be a clear, responsive communicator with sound media handling skills, able to work at pace and under pressure with discretion and good judgement. A willingness to take a full and active part in the life of the College, including some evening and weekend work, is essential.

Beyond the professional skills, we are seeking someone of genuine personal integrity - kind, selfless, and in full sympathy with the College’s life and purpose, its ministry and mission, who is able to work in ways which not only support others but release their full; potential to work in a common cause. This is an institution shaped by faith and service, and the right candidate will feel that, not just understand it.

If you want to play a defining role in one of Britain’s most distinctive institutions, we would love to hear from you.
