IPSA
Board Member
Role Introduction
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) plays a vital role in upholding democracy and maintaining public confidence in Parliament. The Speaker of the House of Commons is now seeking a new Board Member to help guide IPSA through the next stage of its development. As the independent regulator and administrator of MPs’ pay and business costs, IPSA ensures public money is used fairly, transparently and effectively in support of MPs’ parliamentary duties. Established by the Parliamentary Standards Act 2009, IPSA is the independent body that regulates and administers public funding in support of the UK's 650 MPs and the payroll of their staff.
This is a distinctive opportunity to contribute to the future of Parliamentary democracy by helping to shape the strategic direction of an independent statutory body operating at the heart of public life. Working alongside the Chair, fellow Board Members and the Executive, the successful candidate will help oversee IPSA's delivery of its statutory responsibilities, support organisational transformation, strengthen governance and risk management, and ensure the organisation continues to balance strong regulatory oversight with excellent customer service. The role offers the opportunity to influence decisions on matters including corporate strategy, organisational performance, pay and pensions, and public accountability.
We are seeking an individual with substantial senior leadership and Board-level experience gained within complex organisations.
Candidates should bring a strong understanding of governance and corporate best practice, experience of overseeing organisational transformation in a customer-focused environment, and the ability to provide constructive challenge and support at Board level. Demonstrable integrity, independence and sound judgement are essential, together with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders. An understanding of the appropriate balance between being a regulator and service provision and an awareness of the UK political environment are also required. Applicants must not have been a Member of Parliament within the past five years.
The selection panel is committed to attracting a diverse range of candidates and welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds, communities and regions of the United Kingdom. A diverse Board strengthens decision-making, challenge and public confidence, and IPSA is committed to fostering an inclusive culture where different perspectives are valued.
