Role Introduction

Salary:                     £170,000 - £205,000 (+ 15% PRP)

The Health Data Research Service (HDRS) has been created to transform how health and care data is accessed for research across the UK. Backed by up to £600 million of investment from the UK Government and Wellcome, HDRS will provide a secure, trusted single access point to national-scale health data, accelerating medical breakthroughs, improving patient outcomes and strengthening the UK's position as a global leader in life sciences and health research.

Operating across all four UK nations, HDRS brings together government, the NHS, researchers, industry and patients to create a more joined-up, secure and efficient health data ecosystem. Public trust, security and collaboration sit at the heart of everything it does.

We are now seeking an exceptional Chief Technology and Product Officer to join the Executive Leadership Team at a pivotal moment in HDRS's development. This is a rare opportunity to shape the technology, product and data strategy of a new national organisation with the potential to transform health research for generations to come.

The successful candidate will establish and lead HDRS's technology and product function, defining the architecture, platforms and products that will underpin its services. They will develop and deliver an ambitious technology and product roadmap, ensuring that HDRS builds secure, scalable and resilient platforms that meet the needs of researchers, the NHS, industry partners and patients alike.

Working closely with the Chief Executive and Executive Leadership Team, the Chief Technology and Product Officer will play a central role in shaping the organisation's overall strategy. They will build and lead high-performing multidisciplinary teams across engineering, product and technology, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration and delivery while embedding the highest standards of security, resilience and public trust.

The role will require close partnership with senior leaders across the NHS, government, academia, industry and the wider health data ecosystem to ensure HDRS's technology strategy aligns with national priorities and enables collaboration across organisational boundaries. The successful candidate will also oversee the development of a modern technology estate, establish system-wide architecture, drive product excellence and ensure HDRS continues to evolve as a trusted national platform.

Candidates will bring a significant track record of executive leadership within complex technology and product environments, with experience developing large-scale digital platforms, technology strategy and system architecture. They will combine deep technical credibility with outstanding strategic leadership, having successfully led multidisciplinary technology, engineering and product teams through periods of growth and transformation.

Experience within healthcare, life sciences, health data or similarly complex, highly regulated environments would be advantageous, alongside an appreciation of the importance of public trust, data governance and information security. Above all, candidates will be motivated by HDRS's mission and excited by the opportunity to build a national capability that will improve lives through better health research.
