University of Oxford
External Member of Council
Role Introduction
Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of the leading centres of research and learning globally. Ranked number one in the world for a record 10th consecutive year, the University employs over 16,900 staff and has an annual income exceeding £3.1 billion. It is home to more than 26,000 students from over 160 countries, and is committed to advancing knowledge and education for the benefit of society worldwide.
The University’s executive governing body is Council, responsible for academic policy, strategic direction, and oversight of administration, finances and property. We are seeking an external member to join the University’s Council. It is intended that they will also chair the Audit and Scrutiny Committee.
This is an opportunity to contribute to the governance and future direction of a uniquely complex and internationally renowned institution. The Audit and Scrutiny Committee plays a critical role in providing independent assurance to Council on matters including risk management, internal control, governance, regulatory compliance, data assurance, and value for money.
We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate significant experience in the governance of large, complex organisations, ideally including experience of audit, risk, or financial oversight at board level. Alongside this, candidates will bring sound judgement, independence of thought, and the ability to engage constructively across a wide range of issues and stakeholders. A strong personal commitment to higher education, and to the values and ambitions of Oxford as a collegiate and inclusive university, is essential.
The time commitment is typically 2–3 days per month, including participation in Council meetings (a mix of in-person and virtual), committee work, and wider engagement with the University. The appointment is for an initial four-year term, with the possibility of renewal. The role is unremunerated, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
