Role Introduction

Stockport Grammar School is one of the North West’s leading independent day schools, educating around 1,450 pupils aged 3–18 across its Nursery, Junior and Senior Schools on a single, well-resourced campus. Founded in 1487, the School combines a rich heritage with a progressive outlook, offering a broad academic curriculum and an extensive co-curricular programme within a warm, inclusive and supportive community. Academic results are strong, underpinned by outstanding teaching and a deep commitment to pupil wellbeing, kindness and respect. Located in the thriving and well-connected town of Stockport, close to Manchester and the Peak District, the School benefits from a loyal community, excellent facilities and a clear ambition for the future.

The School now seeks to appoint an outstanding Bursar / Chief Operating Officer and Clerk to the Governors to provide strategic and operational leadership across all non-academic functions. Reporting to the Head and serving as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Bursar will lead the School’s financial stewardship, operational strategy and commercial development, ensuring the long-term sustainability and success of the organisation. With responsibility for areas including finance, estates, IT, compliance and risk management, the role will work closely with the Head and Governing Body to shape and deliver the School’s strategic priorities, oversee major capital and infrastructure projects, and develop new revenue opportunities.

The successful candidate will be a strategic and commercially astute leader with significant senior management experience within a complex organisation. They will bring strong financial and operational expertise, alongside the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, manage change and work effectively with governors and senior stakeholders. A thoughtful and collaborative communicator, they will demonstrate high levels of integrity, resilience and emotional intelligence, coupled with the analytical and project-management skills required to drive organisational performance. Above all, they will share the School’s values and commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and the continued development of a thriving educational community.
