Canal and River Trust
Chief of Staff
Role Introduction
Be at the Heart of a Watershed Moment for England and Wales' Waterways.
England and Wales' 2,000-mile network of canals and rivers is one of the nation's great treasures - a living, breathing inheritance that connects communities, restores wellbeing, protects nature and keeps history alive for the 600 million visits made to the towpath each year. The Canal & River Trust is the charity entrusted with this remarkable network, and with the appointment of a new Chief Executive, Campbell Robb, it stands at the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
With a bold agenda taking shape, rooted in nature recovery, health and wellbeing, inclusive access and long-term financial sustainability, the Trust is seeking an outstanding Chief of Staff to work at the very centre of the organisation. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, you will be a trusted adviser and strategic partner, helping to translate vision into action, drive organisational priorities and ensure the executive team operates with clarity and pace.
The role calls for senior leadership experience in a complex, purpose-driven organisation, alongside the political acuity and personal authority to work confidently at board and executive level. You will be a skilled communicator, a thoughtful relationship builder, and someone who thrives working collaboratively behind the scenes to create the conditions for others to succeed. Above all, you will be motivated by the Trust's mission: to protect and enhance these extraordinary waterways for people, nature and future generations. If you are ready to help shape one of the most exciting periods in the Trust's history, we would love to hear from you.
