Role Introduction
The Clothworkers’ Company is one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies of the City of London and among the most historic and influential of the City’s ancient guilds. With a heritage spanning almost five centuries, The Company combines tradition with a contemporary outlook, maintaining a strong sense of purpose that reflects both its origins in the textile trade and its modern charitable and civic responsibilities. Today, The Clothworkers’ Company plays an active role in supporting textile education, skills, innovation and opportunity, while fostering fellowship, service and engagement among its membership.
The Clerk to The Clothworkers’ Company is the senior executive leading The Company. Reporting to the Court of The Clothworkers’ Company, the Clerk acts as an effective liaison between The Company and its Members while leading and managing the Staff team, as well as occupying a highly visible ambassadorial role alongside The Master. The position requires a careful balance of tradition with innovation, enabling change while upholding The Company’s values in the delivery of the Court’s strategy. The next Clerk will oversee the 50th anniversary of The Clothworkers’ Foundation, the 500th anniversary of The Clothworkers’ Company and ensure the successful completion, occupation and operation of The Company’s new Hall in 2029.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished senior leader, with demonstrable CEO or COO-level experience, who combines strategic authority with a highly effective, collegiate and inclusive management style. They will bring a deep understanding of good governance and of the particular dynamics of a membership organisation, alongside the intellectual rigour, financial literacy and organisational discipline required to manage complex priorities, projects and resources to a consistently high standard. An outstanding ambassador, they will build and sustain trusted relationships with Members, Staff and external stakeholders through exceptional interpersonal skills and sound judgement, leading through influence, example and diplomacy. Above all, they will show a strong alignment with The Clothworkers’ ethos and values, a calm and resilient temperament, and the energy, creativity and enthusiasm to foster a positive culture, challenge constructively, and support others to give of their best and to develop for the future.
