Royal Star & Garter
Chief Executive
Role Introduction
Lead a century-old charity into its most ambitious decade yet, and help many thousands more veterans and their families live well.
Royal Star & Garter provides loving, compassionate care and support to veterans and their families, helping them to live well with disability, dementia and other complex needs. Founded in 1916 to care for servicemen returning from the First World War with life-changing injuries, we have spent more than a century making sure that those who have served receive care that recognises their experiences, respects their choices and enriches their quality of life.
Today, our four Homes in Solihull, Surbiton, High Wycombe and Worthing provide specialist nursing, dementia, rehabilitation, respite and end-of-life care of exceptional quality. Two are rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission and our work has been recognised with national awards, most recently at the Armed Forces Community Awards 2026. Beyond our Homes, Day Care, Lunch Clubs and our Telephone Friendship Service reach veterans who might otherwise face loneliness and isolation. The Veteran Friendly Framework, which we lead with the Royal British Legion, helps care providers across England recognise veterans and respond to their needs.
We are now seeking our next Chief Executive at a pivotal moment. We commenced our merger with Care for Veterans in 2025, with final integration planned for the end of 2026. Our strategy now sets out an ambition to increase our impact tenfold over the next decade. This strategy is shaped by what veterans and their families have told us: they want support earlier, independence for longer, and care closer to home that understands their lives. Our Homes will develop as centres of excellence, and alongside them we will grow home-based support, rehabilitation and therapy, community hubs, end-of-life pathways and research into dementia and acquired brain injury. The incoming Chief Executive will turn this ambition into reality. They will do so while protecting the quality, safety and financial sustainability of the care that residents rely on every day.
We are looking for an inclusive, visible and values-led leader with a successful record of leading a complex, multi-site, people-centred organisation at senior executive level. The successful candidate will have delivered ambitious strategy and transformation while sustaining excellent day-to-day operations. They will bring strong financial and commercial acumen, sound judgement and confidence working with a Board. They will build influential partnerships across the Armed Forces, health, social care, government and research sectors, and act as a compelling advocate for veterans. Above all, they will combine ambition for what the charity can become with a deep commitment to the dignity and wellbeing of those we serve. Experience of regulated services or an understanding of Service life would be valuable, and we warmly welcome candidates from different sectors and backgrounds.
This is a rare opportunity to lead a much-loved national charity, with dedicated colleagues and volunteers, a supportive Board and a clear mandate to reach many more members of the Armed Forces community.
