Role Introduction

The Ruth Strauss Foundation seeks an accomplished new Chair to succeed Terry Grote OBE, as the organisation embarks on its next phase of development. Launched in Ruth’s memory in 2019, the Foundation focuses on two primary aims: providing specialist support for families where a parent has incurable cancer, and supporting non-smoking lung cancer research and awareness. Having successfully established its programmes and built a high public profile through major events like Red for Ruth, the Foundation punches far above its weight in visibility and impact.

At this key inflection point, the Foundation is maturing beyond its start-up phase and requires a Chair to guide its future strategy, impact, and development. The incoming Chair will oversee a board of independent trustees and work closely with the Foundation’s founder, Sir Andrew Strauss, and the CEO.

The successful candidate will be an effective board leader with experience in charity governance and fundraising. As an impartial and independently minded leader, they will possess the diplomacy and emotional intelligence to guide the executive team through opportunities and risks alike. The Chair must bring a strong personal network and a willingness to leverage it to broker strategic partnerships, influence policymakers, or support fundraising endeavours. While experience from various sectors is welcomed, a deep commitment to the charitable mission, and the ability to act as an assured public representative for the Foundation are key qualities.
