Role Introduction

The Environment Agency plays a vital role in protecting and enhancing England’s environment – from improving water quality and tackling pollution, to building resilience to climate change and supporting sustainable economic growth. Working at the intersection of environment, economy and society, we are a national delivery body with over 13,000 employees committed to creating a better place for people and wildlife.

We are now seeking a Finance Director to join our Executive Team. This is a highly influential role at the centre of one of the UK’s most important public organisations - offering a unique opportunity to shape how financial leadership drives performance, supports delivery and enables long-term sustainability. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, the Finance Director will play a critical role in ensuring that financial insight, risk management and value for money are embedded in decision-making at the highest level. As a full member of the Executive Team, you will bring independent, evidence-based judgement - supporting strategic choices, challenging assumptions and helping the organisation deliver its priorities effectively.

This is not a traditional finance role focused solely on stewardship. We are looking for someone who can use finance as a lever to improve organisational performance - driving better prioritisation, stronger accountability and more effective use of resources across a complex, high-profile national organisation. You will operate in a politically sensitive and fast-evolving environment, working closely with senior stakeholders across government, including Defra, and contributing to key decisions where financial, operational and reputational considerations intersect.

The role also offers the opportunity to further strengthen and modernise the finance function—building capability, improving systems and supporting areas such as income generation, commercial capability and long-term financial resilience.

We are open to candidates from a range of backgrounds, including the public, private and third sectors. You will bring strong financial leadership experience, with the ability to operate credibly at the top table, influence across organisational boundaries and apply sound judgement in complex environments. This is an outstanding opportunity for a talented finance leader looking to broaden their impact and play a central role in shaping the future direction and performance of a major national organisation.

The Environment Agency is committed to innovation, inclusion and transformation. We welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds and are dedicated to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can perform at their best.
