The National Audit Office (NAO) occupies a unique place in public life. As Parliament's independent public spending watchdog, we help hold government to account, support better financial management and highlight where public services can deliver better value and outcomes. As two non-executive directors reach the end of their terms, we are seeking two successors who will bring independent judgement, constructive challenge and strategic insight to the Board.

This is a significant time to join the NAO. Our work reaches across the full breadth of government and public services, informing parliamentary scrutiny, promoting stronger financial management and highlighting innovation across the public sector.

One appointee will bring recent and relevant audit practice experience, together with a strong understanding of audit quality, assurance and professional standards. They will be expected to chair the NAO's Audit and Risk Assurance Committee. The second will bring senior leadership experience from the Civil Service or wider public sector, with a deep understanding of government, public service delivery and leading complex organisations at scale. 

We are looking for exceptional individuals with board-level experience, sound judgement, political awareness and a strong commitment to public service. Successful candidates will help shape the NAO's strategic direction, contribute to its effective governance and provide independent challenge and oversight as part of an open, constructive and collaborative Board.

It is essential that the NAO upholds the highest standards of propriety in its governance. To avoid any conflicts of interest, we are unable to consider applications from individuals who hold executive or non-executive positions within organisations audited by the NAO.

Appointments are made by Parliament's Public Accounts Commission on the recommendation of the NAO Chair. Appointments are for a three-year term, renewable for a final three-year term. The recruitment process will include a pre-appointment hearing with the Public Accounts Commission.
