Role Introduction

The Environment Agency is the leading public body responsible for protecting and improving the environment in England while supporting sustainable development and economic growth. From reducing flood risk and improving water quality to regulating industry and tackling waste crime, the Agency plays a central role in addressing some of the nation's most significant environmental and economic challenges. With around 13,000 employees and an annual budget of approximately £1.7 billion, it is Defra's largest arm's-length body.

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is seeking to appoint three outstanding individuals to join the Environment Agency Board. These appointments come at an important time for the organisation as it works to deliver the Government's priorities on growth, climate resilience, environmental improvement and effective regulation, while supporting plans for future regulatory reform.

The Environment Agency Board sets the organisation's strategic direction, drives performance and holds the Agency to account for the delivery of its objectives. Working alongside fellow Board members, the Chair, the Chief Executive and senior stakeholders, successful candidates will provide constructive challenge, independent judgement and strategic oversight, helping ensure the Environment Agency continues to deliver high-quality services and environmental outcomes for communities across England.

Defra is looking for candidates who can build strong relationships, communicate effectively, exercise sound judgement and contribute strategic insight. Applications are welcomed from individuals with experience gained in the public, private or voluntary sectors, whether through formal governance roles or other professional or lived experience. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who can bring expertise in areas such as the public sector, engineering, agriculture and farming, environmental NGOs, local government, environmental protection, economics, regulation or growth. Previous board experience is not essential.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to the highest standards of public service, governance and integrity, and will support the Environment Agency's mission to create better places for people and wildlife while contributing to a more resilient and sustainable future.

Defra is committed to attracting talented candidates from all backgrounds and welcomes applications from individuals who will help ensure board leadership reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. We particularly encourage applications from those who may not have previously considered applying for a public appointment.

Saxton Bampfylde Ltd is acting as an employment agency advisor to Defra on these appointments.
