Copyright Licensing Agency
Independent Non-Executive Director
Role Introduction
The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) is seeking to appoint an Independent Non‑Executive Director, with specific responsibility to chair its People and Remuneration Committee. With annual revenues of over £100m and bilateral agreements with over 40 international partners, The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) plays a critical role in the UK creative economy. CLA is at the forefront of the rapidly developing fields of intellectual property and electronic rights management. It licenses organisations for photocopying, scanning and digital re-use of articles and extracts from print and digital publications, providing several content platforms and digital workflow tools to help its licensees make the most of the content they own.
CLA has just launched the world’s first voluntary collective license endorsed by authors and publishers for generative AI, spanning model training, fine-tuning and retrieval-augmented generation. This new collective licensing solution enables innovation while supporting the lawful, transparent use of opted-in published content in generative AI training, fine-tuning, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
The role of Independent Non‑Executive Director is a senior and influential Board position. Working closely with the Co‑Chairs, Chief Executive and fellow Board members, the postholder will contribute to CLA’s strategy, oversee risk and financial planning, and ensure that CLA’s resources, people and culture are aligned with its mission and long‑term strategy. As Chair of the People and Remuneration Committee, the successful candidate will provide strategic advice, leadership, oversight and challenge of CLA’s people strategy, organisational culture, executive remuneration, talent management and equality, diversity and inclusion.
CLA is looking for an accomplished individual with senior‑level experience of people leadership, organisational development and remuneration frameworks, and with a strong understanding of how people strategy drives organisational performance. Candidates will bring credibility in operating at Board level, the ability to engage constructively with executive teams, and experience of chairing or contributing to a people or remuneration committee. Knowledge of current best practice in HR, EDI, workforce planning and employment law, ideally within a digital or complex organisational context, will be highly valuable.
This is an opportunity to contribute to a highly respected organisation at a pivotal moment, supporting the creative economy while helping shape a modern, inclusive and high‑performing organisation.
