Role Introduction

The Law Society of Scotland is seeking an experienced regulatory leader to become its Head of Regulatory Policy. This is an opportunity to shape the Society’s approach to public interest regulation and help deliver a modern, effective and proportionate regulatory framework.

The Society is the professional body and regulator for over 13,000 Scottish solicitors. It sets and upholds professional standards, protects consumers and promotes confidence in Scotland’s legal profession.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Regulation, the Head of Regulatory Policy will lead the Regulatory Policy Team and oversee a broad portfolio spanning policy development, legislative implementation and operational delivery. A key priority will be ensuring the Society has the frameworks, rules and guidance required to exercise its powers under the Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2025.

The postholder will provide expert advice on complex regulatory matters, support the Regulatory Committee and represent the Regulation Directorate in senior internal and external discussions. They will build constructive relationships with government, regulatory authorities, the profession, consumer bodies and other stakeholders, while overseeing the team’s performance, budget, risk and regulatory projects.

The successful candidate will bring substantial senior experience from a regulatory, legal policy or public law environment. They will have a strong record of developing policy, implementing legislation and advising senior leaders, boards or committees on complex and sensitive issues. Excellent judgement, analytical and drafting skills, together with the ability to lead people and change, will be essential.

Candidates will embody the Society’s values of Respect, Openness, Progress, Inclusion and Integrity and promote a culture of fairness, accountability and continuous improvement.
