Role Introduction

The Nuffield Foundation seeks a new Executive Director for Research, Grants and Programmes (RGP). This key new role will shape the future direction of research funding at this leading independent funder.

The Nuffield Foundation tackles the UK’s biggest social challenges by funding research, generating evidence, and guiding decision-makers to implement solutions that improve people’s lives. Founded in 1943, during the second world war, the Foundation was created with the conviction that its work could help to inform post-war reconstruction. Today, in a world marked by rapid change, entrenched inequalities, social divisions, and deep uncertainties, its purpose remains as vital as ever.

In July 2025, the Foundation published its Strategic Review, renewing the Foundation’s commitment to prosperity, inclusiveness, and fairness, and a strategy focused on the complex challenges shaping lives in the UK today. The Foundation will use its resources to generate evidence, convene debate and promote innovation to deliver lasting social benefits by: influencing policy; improving practice; funding innovative interventions and backing groundbreaking institutions. Over the next five years, the Foundation’s work will be guided by five interconnected topics: a prosperous and fair society; inclusive society; science, technology and society; climate change; and trustworthy & effective institutions.

The ED, Research, Grants and Programmes is a new leadership position, created to help the Foundation to meet the level of ambition and breadth of challenges articulated in the Strategic Review. Reporting to the Foundation’s Chief Executive, Gavin Kelly. The ED will be responsible for developing and shaping the Foundation’s overall research and grants portfolio, to ensure that it remains current, future-focused, and impactful, and that it addresses the key social and economic challenges facing the country. The ED will bring a portfolio-wide strategic perspective, identifying synergies and areas for collaboration, as well as identifying gaps and opportunities for strategic grants. The ED will be a key member of the Foundation’s executive leadership team, and deputise for the Chief Executive, if required. They will also lead and develop the RGP team, identify new research talent, and cultivate networks and partnerships in service of the Foundation’s research and impact.
